Is It Possible to Eat Healthy at the Fair?

My childhood memories of the State Fair include rides, games, and animals, of course. But central to the experience was the food, and we all discussed ahead of time what we planned to eat. Buttery, fluffy biscuits filled with country ham, and warm, chewy fried dough topped with powdered sugar – those were my non-negotiables. My gotta-haves. We also usually tried the local ice cream, … [Read more...] about Is It Possible to Eat Healthy at the Fair?

Want a Sports Drink that Works as Hard as You Do?

Many of us reach for a sports drink when we exercise, work in the yard, or just spend a lot of time outside in the summer. We know we're going to sweat. But sweat isn't just water and salt. It's a mix of vital nutrients that our bodies need. If not replenished, our systems can become unbalanced, and our health can be compromised. The effects may be sudden, in the case of dehydration or heat … [Read more...] about Want a Sports Drink that Works as Hard as You Do?

What’s in Your Shopping Basket? (An Excerpt)

When the FDA announced last week that it would be reconsidering a 22-year-old definition of "healthy," blogger Nicole Akers and I jumped at the chance to comment. She and I have exchanged blog posts a couple of times recently. Nicole's take on the FDA's news appears here, and the following is an excerpt of my article on her site. What does “healthy” mean to you? Or to your neighbor with … [Read more...] about What’s in Your Shopping Basket? (An Excerpt)

Pop Tarts Better than Avocados? FDA to Redefine “Healthy”

Blogger Nicole Akers has written several times for the "Faith and Sweat" blog. When the FDA announced last week that it would be redefining 22-year-old definitions of "healthy," we both jumped at the chance to comment. Here is Nicole's take on the FDA's news. My version is at her website. Remember the This is Your Brain on Drugs commercial series? Here’s a 30 second reminder: This is your … [Read more...] about Pop Tarts Better than Avocados? A Sweet Breakdown on Sugars (An Excerpt)

The following is an excerpt from a guest post I wrote recently for Nicole Akers. Nicole also writes about health and wellness and is exploring some interesting topics on her blog. This is a sequel to an earlier post I wrote for her in which I admitted my sugar addiction.  Honey, coconut sugar, agave. Xylitol, turbinado, brown sugar. Is good ol’, plain sugar getting pushed off the … [Read more...] about A Sweet Breakdown on Sugars (An Excerpt)

Overcoming Lifelong Allergies Naturally

A fine, yellow-green dust coats cars, porches, sidewalks and everything else outside my home right now. The trees and flowers are blooming, and pollen dust storms are visible in the distance. This is spring in the southeastern U.S. And I used to loathe going outside this time of year. Plagued by itchy, watery eyes, and a sneezing, runny nose, I used prescription and over-the-counter … [Read more...] about Overcoming Lifelong Allergies Naturally

Women have a higher risk of Alzheimer's than men but often don't recognize what they can do to reduce that risk. Image is of a woman with outstretched hands, as if to hold a computer-generated image of a brain

Of every three people in the United States living with Alzheimer’s, two are women. And, even factoring in women’s longer lifespans, they’re twice as likely as men to develop the disease. But a recent poll indicated that many women don’t know about their elevated risk, nor what they can do to reduce it. It’s time […]

Still thinking about the conversations, ideas, and Still thinking about the conversations, ideas, and welcome I experienced Saturday @wildgoosefest, and I know this experience will stay with me for a long time. 💟

So grateful to my friends @secondbreathcenter for inviting me to the Goose as part of a panel discussing "Mothering as a Verb."

We talked about ways we've been mothered; ways that we've mothered other people, pets, ourselves, ideas, and things including vocations; and how spiritual practice has supported us in and through that.

What's spiritual practice? It's practical tools and strategies that help you connect more with God, yourself, and others. These mind-body practices can help transform our way of thinking, feeling, and behaving away from fear and control ➡️ toward faith, hope, and love.

For example, through the years I've mothered my creativity, my vocation, and my children with the practices of journaling, mindfulness meditation, and centering prayer. These are some of the ways I refill my tank.

What are ways you fill your tank?

Second Breath offers classes and practices rooted in the Christian wisdom tradition and modern neuroscience. I first experienced those classes in 2018 and this fall will be facilitating an online group going through "The Inward Journey" together. If you're interested in knowing more (or getting a discount code for a class!) send me a DM.

For now, I'm treasuring my weekend, what I learned from many different speakers throughout the day, and the gift of these new sisters and their stories.

tl;dr - I went to the Wild Goose festival and, as part of a panel formed by #secondbreathcenter, spoke about "mothering as a verb." It was deep, authentic, and meaningful.
