If you’re going to send us a photo Christmas card this year, I hope you make sure you’re in it.
We do love seeing your perfect children and grandchildren, and we hope you enjoy seeing our perfect children too. And that vista overlooking Barcelona on your 25th anniversary is lovely.
But without you in the picture, too, the card simply doesn’t mean as much to us.
Remember walking the high school hallways together, thinking that life was tough then? Going to the football games as a group of friends?
Remember sitting around on the floor of your dorm room, swapping stories and eating m&ms?
Remember those long days and nights at our first jobs, where we scraped by on $300 a week and complained together about editors and their late-night hatchet work?
Remember those spreads of cooking creativity at the Supper Club we started? Remember that Dirty Santa game that went on for hours?
Remember the group of us at your wedding, beaming at you as you beamed with joy at each other?
Were your children at any of those? Were your grandchildren? Was Barcelona?
NO!
Sure, those blessings came along on the journey, and that is wonderful and part of what life is all about. By all means include the kids and the dog in your photo. Even Barcelona.
But at the holidays, we want to see YOUR face, your beautiful, beaming, aging face TOO.
Show us how happy you are to have these other beings alongside you in life, even if you’re not always happy. Even if life isn’t always joy and smiles. Even if you’ve put on a few pounds. Even if you’ve found a few gray hairs.
We have, too. And you are important to us.
This Christmas, show us you.
Do you still send photo Christmas cards? Do you always include a photo of you? If not, who gets top billing?
