when priorities collide

Decisions, Decisions: When Priorities Collide

Each day, we're faced with hundreds of small decisions to make. And often, our priorities collide. That can feel especially true during the busy holiday season. Do I start my shopping from the couch, or lace up my boots and go hiking with my family? What about that extra glass of wine I want to have with my friends, even though it's likely to throw off my sleep schedule? Should I eat the … [Read more...] about Decisions, Decisions: When Priorities Collide

what's your one word for 2018?

For Focus, Choose One Word for 2018

I'm not one for making New Year's resolutions, though year-round I do set some goals for myself. But this year I've chosen one word for 2018 to help me stay focused. My one word is discipline. So I admit that the first time this one word came to mind, I winced a bit - since many of us equate the word with punishment. I didn't want to approach my year that way, so I also considered several … [Read more...] about For Focus, Choose One Word for 2018

chase your dreams as you develop yourself personally and professionally

For Better Health, Chase Your Dreams

What reminds you to chase your dreams? As children, most of us had an innate curiosity and believed that one day we could be and do anything. Then somewhere along the way, some of us lost sight of those beliefs and dreams. So now, sometimes we need reminders. We may need to reflect on where we are - both personally and professionally. And think about what our lives could be like if we … [Read more...] about For Better Health, Chase Your Dreams

Reduce Your Risk of Chronic Disease

What illnesses are the most common, costly, and preventable in our nation and other industrialized countries? Chronic disease. In the U.S., as of 2010, 86% of the nation’s $2.7 trillion annual health care expenditures were for people with chronic and mental health conditions. By 2017, that had increased to 90% of the nation's $3.8 trillion in annual health care costs. And heart disease, … [Read more...] about Reduce Your Risk of Chronic Disease

show up anyway when the going gets tough

Step 9: Feeling Unprepared? Show Up Anyway

At different times in our lives, we each encounter situations for which we feel unprepared. Maybe it's a difficult family situation with no end in sight, a work project that grows bigger each day, or simply a personal goal that seems out of reach. Each step hasn't gone as planned. Progress seems elusive. And you feel ill-equipped to finish. If you gave in to your stinkin' thinkin', you might … [Read more...] about Step 9: Feeling Unprepared? Show Up Anyway

My self care story

Temple of the Spirit: My Self Care Story

This is how I discovered the importance of self care and a healthier lifestyle. For a time, I went about my days with anger and frustration simmering just below the surface. I tried to push through and dismiss my feelings, but too often they spilled over and landed on the people I cared about most. The move to a new state that we’d made just a few months prior felt like it had been the … [Read more...] about Temple of the Spirit: My Self Care Story

Coaching is a partnership between a trained, professional coach and a client who wants or needs to reach particular goals or boost their personal and professional potential. Image is of two people shaking hands in partnership

People typically have questions about health coaching, whenever I introduce myself as a coach. And often, depending on the time someone has to talk, the questions start out general and then move to the specific and personal. Perhaps you have a few questions yourself. So today, let’s take a look at some of these frequently […]

How have you been wanting to challenge yourself ph How have you been wanting to challenge yourself physically?

Being physically active can improve your brain health, help manage weight, reduce the risk of disease, strengthen bones and muscles, and improve your ability to do everyday activities.

But it's important to build in rest days, too. Taking regular breaks allows your body to recover and repair. Otherwise, you may risk overtraining and injury, or burnout. Rest days could mean chilling on the sofa or engaging in more active rest - taking a gentle walk, foam rolling, or practicing yoga.

What's your schedule of exercise, physical activity, and rest look like this week? What positive effects will that have in other areas of your life?

These English peas were so good, they're getting t These English peas were so good, they're getting their own post.

First, shelling them took me back more than a few years to when I would shell butter beans and black-eyed peas alongside my grandmother and look forward to our supper together. 💚 We all have memories and associations attached to different foods. What are some of yours? How do they show up in the choices you make around eating?

Second, these peas were delicious and simple, boiled for one minute and seasoned with real butter and salt. What a gift! It's garden season, y'all. What are you most looking forward to preparing for yourself this summer?
