Women and Weight Training: Will I Bulk Up?

When I started going to a gym regularly and lifting weights, I remember thinking: I don't want to bulk up. I simply want to be a little bit stronger. Would I bulk up, like the Incredible Hulk? What benefits would weight training, or resistance training, give me? Why should I do this? And how did this fit into my health goals? As I wondered about all these questions about women and weight … [Read more...] about Women and Weight Training: Will I Bulk Up?

Take Small Steps to Create Habits

Sometimes the doctor delivers a diagnosis and says we must make changes now, or else. And other times, we simply know we need to do some things differently to improve our health. But maybe it's hard to get moving in the right direction. Changing how we eat feels burdensome. And starting an exercise routine seems overwhelming. So we procrastinate. Because it all seems so big. But guess … [Read more...] about Take Small Steps to Create Habits

Get Moving if You Want to Age Well

Let's get moving. If we want to age well, it's an imperative. But with the daily demands of work and home, fitting in a workout seemingly can be difficult. However, studies have shown that even 10 minutes of physical activity at a time can add up to big benefits. The key is, well, to just do it. The how and when of moving more ultimately rests with you, but by moving regularly you'll be … [Read more...] about Get Moving if You Want to Age Well

How have you been wanting to challenge yourself ph How have you been wanting to challenge yourself physically?

Being physically active can improve your brain health, help manage weight, reduce the risk of disease, strengthen bones and muscles, and improve your ability to do everyday activities.

But it's important to build in rest days, too. Taking regular breaks allows your body to recover and repair. Otherwise, you may risk overtraining and injury, or burnout. Rest days could mean chilling on the sofa or engaging in more active rest - taking a gentle walk, foam rolling, or practicing yoga.

What's your schedule of exercise, physical activity, and rest look like this week? What positive effects will that have in other areas of your life?

First, shelling them took me back more than a few years to when I would shell butter beans and black-eyed peas alongside my grandmother and look forward to our supper together. 💚 We all have memories and associations attached to different foods. What are some of yours? How do they show up in the choices you make around eating?

Second, these peas were delicious and simple, boiled for one minute and seasoned with real butter and salt. What a gift! It's garden season, y'all. What are you most looking forward to preparing for yourself this summer?
