4 things I learned in winter 2019

4 Things I Learned in Winter 2019

Before all the white flower buds flutter off the Bradford pear in my front yard, I'm taking a moment to look back on what I learned in winter 2019. Spring isn't officially here yet, but it feels close, with the flowers and trees blooming. Not to mention the April showers that arrived in December and stayed all winter. So it's time to move on. And, it's a good time to look back, to what I … [Read more...] about 4 Things I Learned in Winter 2019

One way to practice gratitude to your self is to write yourself a thank you letter.

Practice Gratitude for and to Yourself

When we practice gratitude, it's good for our emotional and physical health, with recent studies reporting benefits such as less stress, better sleep, fewer aches and pains, and better heart health. But how often do we practice gratitude toward our self? There are many ways to practice gratitude, of course, from saying thank you to making lists and writing … [Read more...] about Practice Gratitude for and to Yourself

I Am: two most powerful words

I Am: Two of the Most Powerful Words

The sign caught my eye as I cruised down the hall in between meetings, and I stopped in my tracks. "I AM," it read. "Two most powerful words, for what you put after them shapes your reality." The sentiment stayed with me. For several days, its declaration sank in further, as I considered how I described myself to others, what words I said to myself (self-talk), and how I viewed myself … [Read more...] about I Am: Two of the Most Powerful Words

Walk Away from Stress Eating

Stress eating can hit at any time. Faced with a challenge, or boredom, or discomfort, we find ourselves pawing in the pantry or digging in the fridge. And then we eat whatever might give us temporary pleasure, not because we're physically hungry. Most often, we reach for the high carbohydrate, high fat, high sugar foods. That's because when we're stressed, high levels from the hormone … [Read more...] about Walk Away from Stress Eating

press pause before saying yes

Step 15: Press Pause Before Saying Yes

The next time someone approaches you with a request - any request - press pause before saying yes. Why? Because you don't have to do it all. Really, you don't. And whenever we say yes to one commitment, we automatically say no to others that may be as or more important. We can't do it all. So we must press our internal pause button and fully consider an offer before we say yes … [Read more...] about Step 15: Press Pause Before Saying Yes

A Bredesen ReCODE coach helps people concerned about or living with cognitive decline implement lifestyle changes that are part of the Bredesen protocol. Colorful image depicts a brain with many synapses and activity

Recently I trained as a Bredesen ReCODE Coach, adding to my professional knowledge base and credentials as I look to help anyone concerned about their brain health. But my desire to prevent and reverse cognitive decline goes beyond a professional achievement. It’s deeply personal, too. About five years ago, someone close to me received a […]

Wait. Pause. Notice. Be still. That's the message Wait. Pause. Notice. Be still.

That's the message I got this afternoon, when I looked up and noticed I'd been sitting in my parked car in front of this bush for a full five minutes. And I hadn't seen it.

I was absorbed by something else. My mind elsewhere, making a list and checking it twice, so to speak. And when I looked up, the beauty of this holly took my breath away. The way the light was hitting the leaves and berries at that moment, I had to get out of my car and snap a pic.

Almost immediately, I felt my shoulders relax, my heart open, my mind clear, even if only for a moment.

'Tis the season. For the hustle and bustle. Life on the hamster wheel. Automatic pilot. The checking off of lists. But that doesn't have to be the only way.

What's helped you - wait, pause, notice, be still - lately?
