Survive the Sugar Season

We're entering the Sugar Season. It begins at Halloween, continues through Thanksgiving, Hanukkah and Christmas, and might not end until perhaps Valentines Day. Candy. Pies. Cakes. Cookies. Sugar, in all its forms. What's a wanna-be healthy eater to do? Make a plan. What's Wrong with Sugar? Americans are eating and drinking too much added sugar, which is sugar or syrup added to … [Read more...] about Survive the Sugar Season

Love the Food that Loves You Back

Love food that loves you back. Which foods nourish your body, mind and spirit? Once upon a time I loved Reese's cups; my in-laws even bought me a 36-pack of them one year for Christmas. I loved pastries, fried dough at the state fair, and ice cream. But then, a few years ago, I started learning about the impact of food on my overall health and well-being. And I started paying closer attention to … [Read more...] about Love the Food that Loves You Back

prep your environment by cleaning out your pantry and refrigerator

Step 3: Prep Your Environment for Success

Once you've determined your health vision and set some goals around it, it's time to set yourself up for success. Yesterday's step focused on creating a healthy-living "echo chamber" to help keep our minds focused on healthy habits. Next step: Pay attention to how our home and work spaces serve us. I've found that we must prep our environment so that it supports our efforts. So what's in your … [Read more...] about Step 3: Prep Your Environment for Success

Making a Simple Sugar Scrub for a Spa Experience

Imagine retreating to a spa, spending the whole day breathing deeply, taking care of yourself, and rejuvenating your body and spirit. But time and money can get in the way of that reverie, so we also need quick and inexpensive ways to create our own mini-spa experiences at home. One of my favorites is to combine simple ingredients into a sugar scrub that can be rubbed on hands, elbows, knees … [Read more...] about Making a Simple Sugar Scrub for a Spa Experience

A Sweet Breakdown on Sugars (An Excerpt)

The following is an excerpt from a guest post I wrote recently for Nicole Akers. Nicole also writes about health and wellness and is exploring some interesting topics on her blog. This is a sequel to an earlier post I wrote for her in which I admitted my sugar addiction.  Honey, coconut sugar, agave. Xylitol, turbinado, brown sugar. Is good ol’, plain sugar getting pushed off the … [Read more...] about A Sweet Breakdown on Sugars (An Excerpt)

I Am a Sugar Addict: An Excerpt

I've been part of a 7-day "Intentional Blogging Challenge" hosted this week by Jeff Goins (goinswriter.com). Here is an excerpt of a post I wrote for nicoleakers.com. I am a sugar addict. Over Valentine’s weekend, I ate a dozen chocolate covered strawberries AND about a pound and a half of homemade fudge that were brought into my home. No exaggeration, unfortunately. The week … [Read more...] about I Am a Sugar Addict: An Excerpt

Coaching is a partnership between a trained, professional coach and a client who wants or needs to reach particular goals or boost their personal and professional potential. Image is of two people shaking hands in partnership

People typically have questions about health coaching, whenever I introduce myself as a coach. And often, depending on the time someone has to talk, the questions start out general and then move to the specific and personal. Perhaps you have a few questions yourself. So today, let’s take a look at some of these frequently […]

How have you been wanting to challenge yourself ph How have you been wanting to challenge yourself physically?

Being physically active can improve your brain health, help manage weight, reduce the risk of disease, strengthen bones and muscles, and improve your ability to do everyday activities.

But it's important to build in rest days, too. Taking regular breaks allows your body to recover and repair. Otherwise, you may risk overtraining and injury, or burnout. Rest days could mean chilling on the sofa or engaging in more active rest - taking a gentle walk, foam rolling, or practicing yoga.

What's your schedule of exercise, physical activity, and rest look like this week? What positive effects will that have in other areas of your life?

These English peas were so good, they're getting t These English peas were so good, they're getting their own post.

First, shelling them took me back more than a few years to when I would shell butter beans and black-eyed peas alongside my grandmother and look forward to our supper together. 💚 We all have memories and associations attached to different foods. What are some of yours? How do they show up in the choices you make around eating?

Second, these peas were delicious and simple, boiled for one minute and seasoned with real butter and salt. What a gift! It's garden season, y'all. What are you most looking forward to preparing for yourself this summer?
